How to Block Spam Calls on Android

To block spam calls on Android, open the Phone app’s Settings and turn on “Caller ID & spam” so suspected spam is flagged or silenced, block individual numbers from your Recents, and — in India — register your number for DND to cut telemarketing calls. No single switch stops every unwanted call, but layering these built-in tools blocks the vast majority. Here is how to set each one up.

Step 1: Turn on Caller ID & spam protection

Google’s Phone app (the default on Pixel and many Android phones) can identify and filter spam for free:

1. Open the Phone app and tap the three-dot menu (top right).
2. Tap Settings, then Caller ID & spam (on some phones it is Spam and Call Screen).
3. Turn on See caller & spam ID so unknown numbers show a name or a “Suspected spam” label.
4. Turn on Filter spam calls so likely spam is silenced and sent to voicemail without ringing.

If your phone uses a different dialer (Samsung, Xiaomi, and others have their own), look for Smart call, Caller ID, or a spam-protection toggle in that app’s settings instead.

Step 2: Block and report individual numbers

When a specific number keeps bothering you, block it directly:

1. Open the Phone app and tap Recents (your call log).
2. Tap the number or its info (i) icon.
3. Choose Block / Report spam and confirm.

Blocked numbers can no longer call or text you, and reporting helps improve spam detection for everyone.

Step 3: Silence unknown callers (optional but powerful)

If spam is relentless, you can route every non-contact to voicemail:

1. In the Phone app, go to Settings → Blocked numbers (or Caller ID & spam).
2. Turn on Silence unknown callers (Pixel) or Block calls from unidentified numbers (other brands).

Calls from numbers not saved in your contacts will not ring — they go straight to voicemail, where you can still see them and call back. The trade-off is that a delivery agent or a genuinely new contact may be silenced too, so glance at your missed calls now and then.

Step 4: Register for DND in India

Indian telecom rules give you a free way to stop registered telemarketers under TRAI’s system:

• By SMS: send START 0 (to block all promotional messages) or START with a category code to 1909.
• Through your operator’s app: Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL all have a DND / Do Not Disturb setting in their apps.
• Online: register on the TRAI National Customer Preference Register (ncpregistry.gov.in) or the DND Service app.

DND stops registered marketing calls and SMS. It will not block scam calls from random personal numbers — those need the spam filter and blocking above.

Call Screen: let Google answer first

On Pixel phones (and gradually on others through the Google Phone app), Call Screen can answer suspicious calls for you. When an unknown number rings, tap Screen call and Google Assistant asks who is calling and why, showing you a live transcript. If it is a real person you can pick up; if it is a recorded spam or robocall, you just hang up without ever speaking. It is an easy extra layer on top of the spam filter, and it keeps your voice and time out of scammers’ hands.

Should you use a third-party caller-ID app?

Apps that identify unknown numbers are popular in India, and they can help flag spam. But weigh the trade-off before installing one: many upload your contacts and call history to their servers to build their database, which is a real privacy cost. The Google Phone app’s built-in caller ID and spam filter already covers most needs without sharing your address book, so try the built-in tools first. If you do use a third-party app, review the permissions it asks for and decline access it does not truly need.

Stay safe: what not to do

Spam and scam calls often try to rush or scare you. A few simple rules keep you safe: never share OTPs, UPI PINs, card numbers, or bank details on a call, no matter who the caller claims to be; do not press keys or say “yes” to unknown recorded calls; and hang up and call the company back on its official number if in doubt. No genuine bank, telecom, or government office will ask for your PIN or OTP over a call. If a caller claims your account, KYC, or SIM will be blocked “in the next hour” unless you act now, that urgency is itself the warning sign. You can report fraud calls and financial scams on the Government of India cyber-crime helpline 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in. Blocking tools reduce the noise, but your own caution is the strongest filter.
