How to Make a WhatsApp Video Call on Laptop

To make a WhatsApp video call on a laptop, install the official WhatsApp Desktop app for Windows or Mac, link it to your phone by scanning a QR code, open a chat, and click the video-call icon. The key thing to know up front: WhatsApp Web (the version that runs in a browser tab) does not support video calls. Desktop app vs WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp on a computer comes in two forms. WhatsApp Web runs in a browser at web.whatsapp.com and is great for typing messages, but it cannot place voice or video calls. The WhatsApp Desktop app is a proper installed program for Windows and Mac, and it is the one that handles calling, better camera and microphone access, and desktop notifications. If video calling is your goal, skip the browser and install the app.

What you need first

• A laptop running Windows 10 (64-bit) or newer, or macOS 11 or newer.
• A working webcam and microphone (built-in or external).
• Your phone with WhatsApp, to link the desktop app the first time.

Install and link WhatsApp Desktop

1. On your laptop, go to whatsapp.com/download and download the app for your system. On Mac you can also get it from the App Store; on Windows, from the Microsoft Store or the website.
2. Install and open it. You will see a QR code.
3. On your phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Linked Devices > Link a device.
