Accessibility Statement

Our Commitment to Accessibility

HogaToga is a technology publication, and we believe that a tech site of all things should be usable by everyone. We design and build with accessibility as a core consideration, not an afterthought. Our target standard is WCAG 2.1 Level AA — the widely recognised benchmark for accessible web content.

This page describes what we have built, what we are still working on, and how to tell us when something does not work for you.

Features We Have Built In

Semantic Document Structure

Every page on HogaToga uses semantic HTML. Articles have a single h1 title followed by a logical heading hierarchy (h2, h3, and so on). This structure lets screen reader users navigate by heading without reading every line, and ensures the document outline makes sense when styles are removed.

Keyboard Navigation

The site’s main navigation, search, article links, and interactive elements are fully keyboard-accessible. You can reach any major section by pressing Tab, activate links with Enter, and close dropdowns or modals with Escape. Focus indicators are visible throughout — we do not remove the browser’s default outline without replacing it with something equally clear.

Dark and Light Theme Toggle

HogaToga includes a built-in dark/light theme toggle in the site header. The setting is remembered across visits. Both themes are designed to meet contrast requirements rather than being afterthoughts layered on a light-only design.

Typography and Contrast

Body text is set at a comfortable reading size with generous line-height. We maintain a minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio for normal text and 3:1 for large text in both theme modes, in line with WCAG AA guidelines. We avoid light-grey-on-white or thin font weights for editorial copy.

Descriptive Link Text

Links across the site use descriptive text that makes sense out of context. We avoid generic link labels like “click here” or “read more” as standalone text. Where a “Read more” link appears at the end of a summary, it includes a visually hidden supplement identifying the article title for screen reader users.

Image Alt Text

All editorial images carry meaningful alt text describing what is shown. Decorative images that add no informational value use an empty alt attribute so screen readers skip them rather than reading out a filename.

No Auto-Playing Media

HogaToga does not auto-play video or audio. When we embed video content, playback is always initiated by the user. We do not use animated banner ads or animated content that flashes more than three times per second.

Reading Progress Indicator

Long articles display a reading progress bar at the top of the viewport. This is purely visual and does not interfere with screen reader navigation. Users who prefer reduced motion — detected via the prefers-reduced-motion media query — see the bar removed automatically.

Known Limitations and Ongoing Work

We are not done. There are areas we know need more work:

  • Third-party embeds. Some embedded content — social media posts, video players, ad units from external networks — may not meet AA standards. We do not control these platforms, but we are working to minimise their use and to provide alternatives where possible.
  • Older articles. Legacy content published before our current accessibility standards were in place may have missing alt text or inconsistent heading structure. We are working through a backlog to bring older articles up to current standards.
  • Complex data tables. Some comparison tables in reviews and buyer guides may benefit from more robust header associations. We are improving this as we update existing articles and build new templates.

We conduct internal accessibility reviews when we make significant changes to the site’s design or templates. We also test with screen readers on both desktop and mobile platforms.

Report a Barrier

If you encounter something on HogaToga that is inaccessible to you — a page you cannot navigate by keyboard, an image with missing or unhelpful alt text, a colour combination that does not work for your vision, anything — please tell us. We want to know.

Email editorial@hogatoga.com.co with the subject line “Accessibility Report” and a brief description of what you were trying to do, what happened instead, and which page or feature was involved. We will look into it and respond. You can also visit our contact page for other ways to reach us.
